LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles or better known as LA is the second largest metropolis in the United States and the largest in the state of California. The central part of the city houses nearly 4 million people, but the greater urban area of LA extends beyond the city limits and all together there are nearly 15 million people residing there. This makes LA the 14th largest metropolis in the world. If you count nearby Santa Ana, Long Beach and Riverside area the total population reaches close to 18million people, which makes it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. In fact it is safe to say that this area houses over half of the total population of California.
So why do all these people live in LA and its surrounding areas? The reasons are simple. The great climate coupled with great beaches and job opportunities. These were the initial reasons for large amounts of people to mover there and as a result various industries also grew with the city. The most famous being the entertainment industry or Hollywood. Today it has grown to be an international center for culture, trade, finance, media, science and technology. Indeed going by Gross metropolitan product, LA ranks 3rd in the world. And with the presence of Hollywood it also has the distinction of the entertainment capital of the world.
California was first “discovered’ by Spanish explorers in early 1500’s, but it was not until 200 years later people began to settle there. Today California in general and LA in particular probably boasts some of the most diverse ethnicities anywhere in the world. Hispanics are the single largest group. All of these different groups contribute for a vibrant and eclectic mix of cultures which is expressed in many different ways such as cultural activities, art and food. As mentioned earlier LA or southern California is famous for its steady weather. In fact the joke is that the weather here changes from summer, summer, winter and then summer.
As far as activities go, LA has nearly endless possibilities. There are more nightclubs, restaurants and various types of clubs per square mile than any place in the world. You could probably spend an entire life time club/bar hopping and still not see all of them. One thing to remember is that there is perhaps nothing in LA that is considered to be abnormal. The more eccentric one is the more “normal” it is. Remember LA is situated near the ocean. This means it has some great beaches such as Venice Beach, Zuma Beach, Paradise Cove, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach. Venice Beach is the most popular of all the beaches. Here you will find plenty of partying and some great restaurants. It is the “see and be seen” hub of LA. It attracts visitors from all over the country and the world. Other places worth visiting would be the Getty museum, Disney land, Universal Studios and the famous Rodeo Drive.
